Focused Learning Activity for the Week:

Leaves Sorting





Leaves color sorting. Children will learn to sort leaves by color.

 

Materials:

 

Leaves (Red, Yellow, Orange, Brown)

Paper

Glue

Standard Addressed:

P-MATH 8 Child measures objects by their various attributes using standard and non-standard measurement. Uses di erences in attributes to make comparisons.


P-SCI 3 Child compares and categorizes observable phenomena.


Leaves Painting


Leaves Painting. Children will coat leaves in paint using materials provided using printmaking techniques

Standard Addressed:

P-PMP 3 Child demonstrates increasing control, strength, and coordination of small muscles.

P-Sci 1 Child observes and describes observable phenomena (objects, materials, organisms, and events).


Foundational Text for the Week:

Rosie Goes to Preschool

Questions that will be asked throughout the week related to the foundational text:

  • What are some things Rosie did in school? What do you like to do?

  • What do the children do when Ms. Lena starts to sing "Clean Up"?

  • What does Rosie do when it is potty time?

  •  How can we take care of our hands?

  • Why do we have rules? What are the rules when we go to centers, lunch, bathroom, outdoor, etc.


Learning Centers Available for the Theme:

Blocks- Children are encouraged to use explore the block center. They will be shown a few unit blocks, shown where they can be found in the classroom, and shown how to match them to their outline in order to clean up.

 

Dramatic Play- Children are invited to explore the dramatic play area and use the props provided. Dramatic Play will be set up as a kitchen.  Teacher will introduce basic materials, how to use them, and how to put them away.

 

Art- Children are invited to explore the art area. They will be shown a paint container, brush and paper. Teacher will model how to dip brush in paint and paint a few brushstrokes on paper. Students will be shown where materials can be found in the classroom and what they should do when they finish painting.

 

Science- Children will be shown a few items from a collection of natural objects. Teacher will model how students can begin to explore some of the materials. They will be shown where these materials can be found in the classroom and how to put them away when finished.

 

Math- Children will be shown a couple of puzzles. Teacher will model how to take apart and how to put a few pieces together. Students will be shown where puzzles can be found and how to put them away.

 

Library- Students are able to explore books from the classroom library.

 

Writing- Students are invited to explore the materials provided in the writing center. They are encouraged to explore their name cards.  

 

Sensory- Students will be shown a small amount of sand and a few toys. They will be shown where these materials can be found in the classroom.

Family Drawings

Children will be invited to the art center and asked to draw a picture of their family.


Standard Addressed:

P-SE 11: Child has sense of belonging to family, community, and other groups.


Foundational Text for the Week:

Counting on Community by Innosanto Niagara

Questions that will be asked throughout the week related to the foundational text:

  • What are some of the things they counted in this book?

  • What are some of the things we can count in our classroom?

  • What are some things you can do to take care of our classroom?

  • What are some ways you and on can count on (or help) each other?


Learning Centers Available for the Theme:

Activities

Writing Center (Monday & Tuesday)


 

Children will  use a variety of materials to explore writing and communication.

Children experiment with making marks on paper to express ideas as they are ready. Also children may begin to make horizontal lines, then letter-like forms and later make some letters.

 

MATERIALS

• Crayons • Markers • pencils • Blank paper

 

Goal P-SE 9. Child recognizes self as a unique individual having own abilities, characteristics, emotions and interests.

Goal P-PMP 3. Child demonstrates increasing control, strength, and coordination of small muscles


Art Center: Dot Art (Wednesday, Thursday, & Friday)

 

Children will be able to use dot marker to paint. This is a great way for children explore their creativity.

 

Goal IT-PMP 6. Child coordinates hand and eye movements to perform actions.

 

MATERIALS

  • Blank white paper
  • dot markers
