 •Please remember to send sleeping mats to school!!!

If you or your child is experiencing fever, fatigue, congestion, headache, vomiting, or any other covid-like symptoms the night before school, please remain home and obtain a negative result before coming to the school building. If you or your child tests positive and were present any day of the school week, please notify the teacher. Remote work is always available for students at any time.

Focused Learning Activity for The Week

Clay Pots




Introduce children to gardening. Invite children to paint and design clay pots for our class garden.

Materials:
Paint
Paint Brushes
Clay Pot
Various Loose Parts Art Materials

Demonstrates eye-hand coordination and fine motor skills.




Lessons and Activities for the Month

Blocks

Add pictures of plants, gardens, green roofs, farms etc. to the walls of the Blocks/Construction Center for children to reference as they work.

Dramatic Play

Turn Dramatic Play into a flower shop by adding pretend flowers, containers and pictures of flower arrangements as well as a cash register, notepad, writing utensils, etc.to the center. Children can pretend to make, buy, and sell floral arrangements, and explore the idea of buying and selling goods or services. As you play with the children, use and highlight vocabulary words such as bouquet, floral arrangement, florist, and flower.  √ Opportunity for Assessment What does the child understand about the relationship between buying and selling goods?

Art

Provide an assortment of portraits by Kehinde Wiley that include plants in the background. Invite children to observe the art and create their own art in a similar style. They may want to create a similar background and include their own portrait or the portrait of someone else.

Science

Add plants to the science area or throughout the classroom for children to observe and assist in caretaking.

Math

Provide an assortment of seeds and beans as well as trays or containers for sorting. Children can sort by seed color, size, design, or by categories of their choosing. If children need assistance in determining categories for sorting, model sorting for them, sharing your thoughts and sorting criteria aloud as you work.

Library

Students are invited to read fiction and non-fiction books about our theme, Plants.

Writing

Create a plant encyclopedia with pictures and names of an assortment of plants that may be familiar as well as those that may be novel to the students (be mindful of the experiences and cultures of the children in your class as you consider familiarity and novelty). Children can draw and label pictures of plants that are near the places they live or on their way to school, or they can focus on other plants they find interesting.

Sensory

Use green foam pieces to create water lilies, add them to the water in the sensory table along with toy ducks and invite children to play in the pond.

Focused Learning Activity for The Week


Retelling a story and Sequencing events



Introduce the rainbow fish storyboard in the library for children to retell and orally dictate the events in the story. Encourage children to sequence in order. What happened first? What happened next? What happened in the end? Talk about feelings and what did rainbow fish do to overcome his feelings and fix the problem.

Uses a combination of drawing, dictating, oral expression, and/or emergent writing to narrate an event or events in a sequence.




Drops on a Penny

Provide a penny, a pipette, and a container of water. Invite children to see how many drops of water they can fit on the penny. Encourage children to count each drop of water as it drops onto the penny and occasionally note how many drops there altogether.

Pre-K Common Core Learning Standard(s) Addressed

PK.MATH.3A

When counting objects, says the number names in the standard order, pairing each object with one and only one number name and each number name with one and only one object. (1:1 correspondence)



Lessons and Activities for the Month

Blocks

Add pictures of ice castles to the Blocks/Construction Center. Invite children to refer to these pictures and build their own ice castles. Consider covering the blocks with white paper and adding clear plastic cups for children to use in their structures.

Dramatic Play

Laundromat: Use cardboard boxes to create washers and dryers; add clothing, empty bottles of detergent and pretend money for children to use at the laundromat. Invite them to do the laundry and talk about the role water plays in cleaning clothes. If desired, children can design and set up the laundromat scene. 

Art

Add spray bottle to the art area and introduce what happens to the paint when weIntroduce watercolor paint and brushes into the art area. Provide cups of water and paper for children to explore water colors and color mixing techniques.

Science

Land or Water: Provide an assortment of small animal and sea creature toys (e.g., dog, cow, fish, shark, etc.). Invite children to sort the toys into two categories: those that live in water and those that live on land. Use a blue piece of paper as a base for the water animals and green for land.


Math

Fish for a Number: Provide a pretend fishing pole with a magnetic end, and a set of dot cards. Invite children to draw a card from the set of cards, determine the number of dots on the card and then fish for the number.

Library

Students are invited to read books about our theme, Water.

Writing

Students will be asked the question "What happens when we put things in water?" and be asked to write or draw a picture of their answers.

Sensory

The children are invited to explore alphabet and numbers in the water. Introduce orbees into the sensory table.
