Activities for virtual students at home

Parents must submit photo evidence of all completed activities on Seesaw or to my email: MrTaraza@olqmnyc.org

Writing and Tracing Our Names (Monday & Tuesday)

Children will practice writing the letters of their name.

Materials:

Pencil/Marker/Crayon/Color Pencil/Chalk

● Goal P-LIT 6. Child writes for a variety of purposes using increasingly sophisticated marks

● Goal P-PMP 3. Child demonstrates increasing control, strength, and coordination of small muscles.

"Magicn Corn Kernels" - Seed Germination (Wednesday & Thursday)

The first day can be used to gather supplies for the experiment. If you have everything already, then you may proceed with the following instructions below.

Materials:

•Popcorn Kernel

• Mini Ziploc bags, one per student

• Moistening supplies (e.g., cotton balls, paper towels, or Soil Moist, which can be purchased at your local home gardening store). Enough for each Ziploc bag.

• OPTIONAL: string to make necklaces for the students to wear their Ziploc bags

Explain to your children that you have something very special to give them – “magic corn kernels” – As you hand out the supplies, remind your children that farmers are very patient and that, like farmers, they need to be very patient and wait their turn.

• Give each child a handful of corn kernels, a Ziploc baggie, and moistening supplies

• Explain to the children that, with a little warmth and moisture, the “magic corn kernel” can germinate (and explain that germinate means that the seed will sprout and the plant will start to grow)

• Instruct each child to place his/her magic corn kernels into the Ziploc bag, insert the moistening supplies (e.g., wet cotton ball, moist paper towel, etc) and lock the Ziploc bag shut.

• Check in with children over next 3-to-5 days until seeds germinate; wow, it’s magic!!!!

• After the kernels have germinated, ask the children what else they think the seeds will need to keep growing (e.g., sun, water, soil, etc). Explain that plants need nutrients from the soil to grow big and strong. Tell students that they can take their sprouted kernels home to plant in the soil with their parents’ permission.

● Goal P-SCI 1. Child observes and describes observable phenomena (objects, materials, organisms, and events).

● Goal P-SCI 2. Child engages in scientific talk

● Goal P-SCI 5. Child plans and conducts investigations and experiments.

"Magicn Corn Kernels" - Checkin (Friday)

Check on the status of the kernels. If the cotton / moistening suppplies have dried up, tell children to wet them again so they can continue to grow over the weekend. Reseal the bag and make sure they are recieving plenty of sunlight. We will retun the following week to see if any changes have occured.
